Piano Lessons

Piano tuition is available from age 5 upwards with no age limit!

All standards from beginner to diploma are taught.

Lessons take place in my music studio in my family home, on my Yamaha C5 grand piano.

Requirements

Piano students need a piano. Digital keyboards are also acceptable if they have a sensitive touch and at least three octaves.

Music books – which depend on the level of the student, are also needed.

Details

  • Standard lessons are booked in advance per term with a regular weekly time-slot allocated per pupil. Up to three pay-as-you-go lessons may be taken as a ‘trial’ before committing to a term.

It is also possible to arrange a more flexible time, ie fortnightly.

Beginner lessons are 30 minutes. More advanced students may need 45 – 60 minutes.

Discounts are available for lessons of more than 30 Minutes, and for families who attend 2 or more 30 minute lessons per week.

New pupils are given a schedule which outlines the dates of lessons and the fees. I also have a comprehensive terms of business which I invite you to read before committing.

  • Depending on the level of the student, the following are incorporated into the lessons:

    • rote playing

    • learning music notation

    • rhythm games

    • Technique (posture, scales, studies etc)

    • Repertoire

    • Duets with the teacher

    • Sight-reading skills

    • Aural awareness

    • Creativity: elementary composing and arranging

    • Written music theory

    • Music games (educational!)

  • From time to time I organise student recitals to which parents are invited. This gives pupils a chance to play in ‘public’ and experience the delight of giving music for others to enjoy.

Also, on occasion, an examiner from ABRSM may also be invited to take a masterclass pre-exam!

    These are also sociable occasions!

    Participation is optional!

  • Exams are optional!

The goal is to enjoy playing and not feel pressurised to perform or be examined.

If taken, pupils are entered for the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams.

A pass at Grade 6 is awarded with 8 – 12 UCAS points depending on the mark gained.

A pass at Grade 7 is awarded with 12 – 16 UCAS points depending on the mark gained.

A pass at Grade 8 is awarded with 18 – 30 UCAS points depending on the mark gained.

  • "My 8 year old daughter began piano with Rhona last year, and really thrived under her tuition. Rhona is very experienced and patient. She has a clear and supportive teaching style and uses great materials which are both fun and steadily progress piano playing. My daughter really enjoyed being able to play tunes she recognised, from an early stage. I would thoroughly recommend Rhona to anyone wishing to learn the piano."

  • "Rhona has built a great teaching relationship with both our children and they have made huge progress with her input. She has engaged with their interests and strengths, built their confidence and made learning the piano fun"
